Karen Novotny was inspired by her father, a realistic painter, who gave her a camera when she was eight; later, some of her photographs became the basis for his paintings. Novotny brings her cultivated and eclectic artistic sensibility to her architectural photography. Using both natural and artificial light sources, Novotny uses the interplay of light and shadow to extend the flat plane of a photograph into three dimensional space. She combines rich color schemes, strong lines, and bold graphics to convey the life of interior and exterior spaces and forms.
